Florida Man Gets Life for Grandmother’s Death In Fire He Set

August 25, 2009

A South Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his grandmother by setting her house on fire in a scheme to collect insurance money.

A Miami-Dade judge handed down 30-year-old Lewis Drayton’s sentence Thursday. He was convicted last month of first-degree murder and arson in the August 2004 death of 60-year-old Virginia Howard.

Drayton said he did not know his grandmother was home when he torched the house for the insurance money.

But prosecutors said Drayton would have profited as a beneficiary on his grandmother’s life insurance policy.
