FEMA Offering Aid to Storm Victims in Kentucky’s Jefferson County

August 19, 2009

Community relations teams and home damage inspectors from the Federal Emergency Management Agency are reaching out to those affected by the severe storms and flooding in Jefferson County on Aug. 4.

The community relations specialists – wearing FEMA shirts and carrying photo-identification badges – are going door-to-door to provide key information about disaster-assistance programs.

FEMA-contracted damage inspectors are also in the field to help people who have storm-related property damage and have registered for assistance. Inspectors have photo identification and do not charge for their services.

Disaster-assistance programs that are available include grants to help pay for temporary disaster housing; grants for essential repairs needed to make a residence safe and functional; low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration for repairing and replacing the storm-damaged properties of homeowners, renters, private non-profit organizations and businesses; and other grants for serious disaster-related needs and expenses not covered by insurance or other assistance programs.

The only way to get FEMA’s help is to apply directly with the agency online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362).
