Insurance Investigators Have Few Clues in Kentucky House Explosion

July 30, 2009

Investigators still aren’t certain why a vacant house exploded in Florence, but they have some clues.

The two-story home blew up on Sunday. No one was injured.

Florence Fire Chief Marc Muench told The Kentucky Enquirer that water in the water heater was still hot. Muench said the house had been empty for years and it wasn’t clear why the water heater was still on. The house was put on the real estate market about a month ago.

What was left of the house was dismantled and insurance company investigators removed two gas furnaces for testing.

The newspaper cited Boone County property records in reporting the value of the house was $135,000 and it was owned by the estate of a Fort Mitchell couple.
