Florida Parents, Navy Hospital Settle Medical Malpractice Suit

July 17, 2009

Almost a year after their son died, the parents of a boy born at Jacksonville Naval Hospital have settled a medical malpractice lawsuit with the hospital for $500,000.

Joseph and Kendra Alcorn, formerly of Orange Park, reached the settlement last week with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, which represents the hospital.

Kendra Alcorn gave birth to twins in 2005 after a high-risk pregnancy. The first child was healthy, but the second baby suffered from lack of oxygen.

The Alcorn’s attorney Sean Cronin claimed the hospital staff was negligent in failing to prevent the oxygen deficiency, which led the boy to be blind and have cerebral palsy. He died on Sept. 27, 2008, three years and four months after his birth.
