Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney will distribute the first of 15,000 free smoke alarms to low income residents.
The smoke alarms are funded through a $500,000 federal grant received by the state fire marshal’s office in August. The funding will provide free smoke alarms to nearly 10,000 households that are at or below the poverty level, Chaney said.
The Department of Homeland Security awarded the grant and smoke alarms will be delivered and installed by firefighters.
