In typical union fashion, 9 unions have put the future of the Greenbriar resort in jeapardy by calling a strike because they couldn’t get what they wanted. They have also un-wittingly put their own economic future in jeapardy. Unions were founded on the principle of collective bargaining…..but if that failed, they would invoke the “strike”. Let’s examine this action. It’s tantamount to a spoiled child sitting down and pouting because they can’t get their way. These people had good jobs before this strike. Good jobs, particularly in a backward and economically depressed place like West Virginia should be valued and protected. The “strike” is cheap way of trying to gain leverage by putting pressure on an employer to “give in” to demands. It usually involves inconveniencing others to try and gain that leverage. Look what the UAW has done to the big three automakers. The 1,000 workers who thought their jobs were so deplorable that they would rather risk the Greenbriar goint out of business than to continue to work and negotiate will be singing a different tune if the Greenbriar is forced to close. Unions have outlived their usefulness. If they continue to exist in some form, they should hire some effective negotiators instead of relying on bullying the employer.

There’a another resort about 90 minutes away, a competitor of the Greenbriar, that is getting the bookings the Greenbriar has lost because of the strike. If they have a good experience and the pricing is more competitive, you can kiss the Greenbriar goodbye along with all those jobs. I agree, unions do more damage than good. They had a purpose during the industrial revolution, but they’ve long out-lived their usefulness.

Did you notice that a group of insurance agents and brokers cancelled their meeting with the Greenbriar? What kind of chicken-livered deal is that? I would wager that none of those agents or brokers has to face a union “shop” every day. How completely phoney…
If I was a member of that agent’s organization, I would resign immediately.

The Greenbriar should close its doors, hire all new (non-union) staff, and reopen next season with a new, well-trained, professional team from top to bottom.
    Just my humble opinion.
Wal-Mart has the right idea – if one of their stores votes in a union, the rumour is that Wal-Mart will immediately close that store and open another one a few miles away. Bam. No questions asked. No transfers. No re-hires.
The word gets out among other “associates” pretty quickly…

Some senior people from a former employer used to attend this snooty meeting at the Greenbriar. It was quite the affair. Formal attire for some dinners with a heavy dose of butt-kissing. In any event, if the Greenbriar had no staff, what else could the organization do? It had to cancel.
