Natural Gas Explosion Destroys North Carolina Home, Kills Infant

June 23, 2008

The Charlotte, North Carolina Fire Department released the name of a 4-month-old girl killed in the explosion of a house in northeast Charlotte. Her parents were seriously injured.

Fire Department spokesman Mark Basnight said June 20 the baby was Synora Coleman.

Her mother, 21-year-old Courtney Chambers, was listed in good condition at Carolinas Medical Center. The baby’s father, 25-year-old Sylmallis Coleman, was taken to the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill.

Basnight said a natural gas explosion June 19 destroyed the house.

Basnight says firefighters had been called earlier June 19 and checked the area and found no natural gas.

He said the family moved into the house about a week ago.

A telephone message left for Piedmont Natural Gas spokesman David Trusty was not returned June 20.
