This may be a workable solution for weather issues, but it sucks for violence on campus. It’s another ineffective, AFTER THE FACT, effort. When some nut case enters a building and starts whacking people, a stupid siren isn’t going to do much good for the whackees. A system needs to be put in place to stop the whacker in his/her tracks.

well, i think you are not looking at the article, it was due to weather they could not install the siren warning system. it will operate in the inclement weather.

Actually, the outdoor system is not just a siren. It will be used for voice announcements as well. This could have been helpful in the case of Virginia Tech as officials could have announced to students to go back to their residential colleges (dorms) or gather in a safe location. The Virginia Tech shooting was happening as students were walking to class and trying to enter the building. Anything universities can do to provide real time communication will help – especially in a situation like a crime on campus.

here’s the problem with society: why do we need to have big brother (university) try to keep us safe? we all would like to have every step of our life well guarded, but in reality – you can’t. granted that these are our kids going to college and we like for the extra protection. but just because we have these protections systems in placed, does not mean it will protect them. at least, it can give a heads up.
