Weather researchers at N.C. State University say a half dozen or more tropical storms may become hurricanes this year, with at least one making landfall on the southeast coast.
Dr. Lian Xie and graduate student Elinor Keith said in a report that the 2008 hurricane season could produce 13 to 15 named storms in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. The season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.
Their report said six to eight storms may become hurricanes, with winds of 74 mph or higher. It said one or two of the named storms, which include tropical storms with winds from 39 to 73 mph, could hit the southeastern U.S. coast.
