100-Year-Old Baptist Church in Georgia Burns to Ground

State fire investigators were sifting through the charred remains of a central Georgia church that burned to the ground.

“The only thing standing is the face of the church,” McIntyre, Ga., police Sgt. Bernard Hughes said.

The fire at the century-old McIntyre Baptist Church was discovered shortly before 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 28.

Authorities did not know the cause but hoped state arson investigators could determine the origin of the flames.

“I’ve got a state fire marshal on the way and two ATF agents waiting on him to arrive,” McIntyre Police Chief Wayne Amerson said last week.

He said the wind was blowing and there were many hot spots.

Pastor Terry Moseley said he believes the fire may have been caused by an electrical problem.

Fire crews from several communities in Wilkinson County battled the blaze.
