These people are idiots! You don’t design houses to protect the 1% of carless and neglient fools of the world. Instead of lobbying to change a construction code, why no focus on educating the irresponsible and stupid people who cause these fires? We now design cars with multiple airbags and traction control to compensate for the idiots behind the wheel. Now it’s re-engineer housing to protect the idiots who smoke or cook carelessly. There’s a natural selection factor here that we’ll lose by protecting those who can’t survive on their own.

Perhaps you might feel diffently if it was your family that died in a fire. And six died because of one. Were the other 5 “naturally selected” to die because of the “stupidity” of one? Sprinklers are required in most public venues(hotels, motels, restraurants, etc). It has not been “created” to compensate carelessness of a people as a whole. But rather to lessen the risk of many dying. Fires are started by other reasons than carelessness. I have been witness to a fire that was caused by lightning. [Yes, I saw lightning hit the house and then a fire started as a result.] Safety devices are not just for careless people, my friend. You can be the safest driver on the road and have an accident. Tree limb falling on a car, tire blowout, hydroplaning, and many other things can happen that are out of our control.
“Survival of the fittest”? We are no longer competing for food and territory for survival. Come out of the forest into civilization–where compassion exists.

Compassion isn’t the issue. The simple reality is that our society is becoming encumbered and choked by paying the “price of non-conformance” of a small number of people. Did you know that almost 50% of medical costs are the result of some form of human stupidity that is considered preventable? Those resources could be put to good use elsewhere. Our response as a society is to keep throwing money at safety to protect against the small percentage of fools out there who endager our lives. If we follow this track, nothing will be affordable because of all the “defensive measures” that have to be built into them. Consider this:
    1. smoke alarms and sprinkler systems to compensate for human faults.
    2. seat belts, front, side, roof airbags, specially designed crash barriers to compensate for human faults.
    3. un-insured and under-insured coverage to compensate for irresponsible humans.
    4. the entire world is inconvenienced by having to remove their shoes at airports to compensate for one idiot.

As for those who perished in this fire…truly a tragedy. It’s also an unfortunate reality of life. One moment of carelessness is all it takes.
