I’d like to know the difference between catastrophic ground collapse coverage and optional sinkhole coverage. If my house is destroyed by a big hole, that’s pretty damn catastrophic to me.

Two of the worst counties for Sinkholes are now being forced into having our sinkhole coverage taken away and if you want it or have to have it due to your mortgage company you will now have to purchase it at a very high cost! The REST of Florida (65 other counties) can “CHOOSE” to drop the coverage if they want to lower their bill. Thanks to Senator Fasano and Representative John Legg for NOT looking out for the best’s interests of their people!
Catastrophic ground collapse only means if a hole opens up in your home, it will not cover ANY holes that open up in your yard, swallow you garage, fence, tree, etc. It also does not include Condo or Manufactured homes. This Bill introduced and pushed by those two legislators was just a way for Citizens to get out of paying ANY claims for sinkholes. Try living in a hose that your doors and windows won’t open and close…that is NOT covered under catastrophic ground collapse. I can’t wait to see when people try selling homes that have damage not covered under this new law. The fallout from this will prove to be the demise of Legg and Fasano!

P.S. I have never filed a claim for sinkhole dammage for those of you that are critics of my posting.

Except the vast majority of sinkhole claims in Florida aren’t for a ‘big hole’ destroying the house. It’s for cosmetic cracking caused by subsurface sinkholes hundreds of feet down. The ‘big hole’ type of sinkhole, while on the news, is very, very rare.

Under statute, the cosmetic damages would have to be covered, the house stabilized and underpinned and grouted and tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars later the work is done, and the ground shifts underneath again, starting it all over.

I went to a sinkhole seminar with Citizens… 3% of their claims are sinkhole related, but 42% of their reserves are. HUGE claims for very little damage.

Pasco & Hernando counties would have less issues with sinkholes if a large portion of our water weren’t being sold to Hillsboro County so people can have green yards!!!
