There is a movement afoot in the political arena where the vehicle title and registration are entered into a shared database with the insurance department to ensure that any vehicle with plates is also required to have an electronic record of insurance; any. Georgia implemented the electronic insurance compliance system to match all titles/registration with an insurance policy. This obviates the need for a paper insurance card (which can be faked); each insurance company is required to report the year, make, VIN, policy number and effective date for each vehicle they insure. And when the vehicle is removed or the policy lapses, the insurance company reports that too. Every time a cop stops a car, he runs the VIN and if it is not on record, they take the plates and the owner can be fined. I can see that this method will be copied by other states as Georgia improves its uninsured motorist statistics.

Casual, that is the system I referred to in my post. I know that without reporting the covered VIN, our insureds could not get their tags renewed; not sure who, but when coverage was discontinued, the department of revenue notified some police department with instructions to confiscate the plate; you can imagine how the insured cried foul until they paid their premium and got the policy and coverage reinstated. I don’t know if they can take the car but without a plate, you’re a sitting duck for every cop on the road….

What is Carol Jordan thinking!!!!! A tax on the poor??? Who is she kidding? Consider it a tax on everybody, no discrimination regardless of assets. If someone can afford to have a car, put gas in it these days and maintain it, they can surely afford to comply with the law and carry liability insurance! Liability protects everybody, not just the rich. Don’t you think that if a rich person causes an accident with a poor person and is liable, the poor person is going to benefit from the rich persons insurance??? Why should someone get the benefit of someone else’s insurance, if they are not willing to comply with the law themselves? LA has it right, NO PAY-NO PLAY! Electronic matching works and when faced with suspensions, fines and possible jail time for repeat offenders versus paying for minimum liability insurance, most people find a way. Been there, done it!!! Instead of fast food, try paying for your insurance!

Several states are responding to Fed drivers license changes/pressures in a way that creates a significant increase in uninsured drivers.
