Check PA or Ohio for that matter. Anyone who sells minimums (especially in states with less than 25/50/25 better make sure their E&O is up to date… if you’re going to have underinsured customers, at least make sure you’re insured. Trust me, you’ll need it.

Will your customers win? Probably not. Will you pay a few thousand dollars to defend yourself? Count on it.

Ignore BI… $5k of PD? I drive a 6 year old car, it’s worth more than $5k. Trust me, I can also find an attorney who can make-up more than 15k of bodily injury and make it believable enough that even if you follow me with a camera for a month you won’t find anything.

Makes me wonder how companies like Safe Auto stay in business (not to disaparage SA… they do well doing what they do).

I’ve sold minimums plenty of times… every time I cringe and wish I could have a tape recorder to document my “you know, this isn’t good, for $25 more you could double that liability”.

How many times do I have to explain to a 20 year old they’re going to have an accident, it’s very easy to exceed state mins, and I don’t want to hear it when they do.

“Oh that’s fine… $25 is two cases of beer, just sell me the minimums.”

    MORONS!

Alabama’s current financial responsibity limits are rather low. A minimum limits policyholder could be facing a lawsuit if they rearended and “totaled” someone else’s late model SUV or VAN. Think about the potential size of physical damage liability claims in a multi-car accident. The person calling him/herself THE FARM should take a deep breath and ask themselves what is in the best interest of Alabama drivers.

I agree with common sense. Alabama’s minimum limits are EXTREMELY low. NC’s minimum used to be 25/50/15 and has since gone to 30/60/25. You’d be surprised how many claims we handle where our minimum liability limits are not enough! Couple the cost of parts and labor these days with rental expenses and diminished value claims and it certainly wouldn’t take much to exceed a PD limit of 10,000.
Alabama’s limits, and other’s like them, are the primary reason NO driver should elect not to carry uninsured and underinsured motorist coverages on their own personal auto policy.

Next time Mr/Ms “The Farm” has an accident where he needs his auto coverage to pay for his “broken body” and someone’s “casualty” – will this amount be enough – 15/30/5?and will he be happy with it..?. Believe me – years ago when I had an auto accident with a stroke as a result of a head injury… 50/100/50 was not enough and remember don’t dare be hit by an uninsured motorist with a 15/30/5 amount. These injuries can sometimes take years to resolve, if at all.
“The Farm” needs to get past “his crying about the good old boys” and understand the days in which we live. We need legislation that makes people go up to “real” standards. They cannot afford not to. If they don’t think about it – we need to make them think about it. When I sell an auto policy, I make sure they understand their limits.

My agent, who happens to also be a friend of the family, made sure that I didn’t purchase minimums in PA. I took my son of the policy , however, after having two at-fault accidents, which, thank goodness were covered completely. Now he has Progressive, with minimums. His 15 year old Honda will likely not be replaced becuase he declined UM/UIM coverage. You can’t make people make smart decisions…..

Stat Guy, good comments. You can’t make people make smart decisions and we shouldn’t have to make people buy limits they can’t afford and especially don’t need. If you drive a new SUV and you’re worried about someone rean-ending you, then make sure you carry the limits you want. Doesn’t matter what the minumum state limits are, my insurance needs are unique to my situation. Plus I can’t count on the fact that the guy that hits me has paid his monthly bill. Alabama will find out that rates will rise and attorneys & chiropactors will reap the financial benefits.
