\”Some Gulf Coast residents are preparing for future hurricane seasons by rebuilding with the help of a North Carolina company that specializes in storm-resistant homes\”… others are building out of straw and sticks knowing full well that when the next storm comes through it\’ll level the house, they\’ll complain and shout racism or that the government is ignoring the plight of \”chocolate cities\”, and we\’ll bail them out again and let them rebuild using straw and sticks again.

I don\’t think it\’s right that homeowner\’s companies are refusing to write new policies in the Gulf region but they should REQUIRE a certain level of construction standard if they\’re going to write.

Come to think of it, maybe someone should mandate new building codes that require that level of construction in new homes or extensive remodels.

I like your reference to sticks and straw and that reminds me of how polynesians built their homes in the south pacific, just sticks and straw so that when it blew away during a storm, they could be easily replaced without draining them economically. the real problem is building in flood or hurricane prone areas. If you must live in a flood plain or on the coast, you should NOT expect to weather a storm without havoc. Build to suit the environment you live in; instead of a mansion, a shack is better and much cheaper…but people keep wanting to put square pegs in round holes, don\’t they?
