I think that the state of Florida should welcome hands free considering the number of fatalities on their highways.
People drive really fast including truckers. Maybe this would cut down on the number of accidents.
As for shaving or eating while driving it should carry the same penalties!

The people who oppose this restriction are probably the same ones who opposed seat belt use. Cell phone use on the road (and parking lots!!!) is extremely dangerous. That\’s what voice mail is all about. Multi tasking individuals need to relax and pull over. That same goes for the make up artists and highway gourmets.

Cell phone use is by far more dangerous than eating or applying makeup – etc.

The brain, when engaged in a dialog, requires a higher degree of concentration in anticipation of responding to the stimulus, and thus deprives the person of the concentration the brain needs to be ready to react to driving conditions.

Listening to the radio, applying makeup, or eating, is a one way stimulus – the individual does not need to be alert and ready to react to the stimulus – it is not anywhere near as distracting as cell phone usage. These issues should not be performed while driving either, but they are in no way in the same category as cell phone conversations.

I agree with your statements, other than the part about applying makeup. Most often when a woman is applying makeup, she is looking in the mirror, not at the road. It is far more dangerous to have your eyes focused on your face than it is to be engaged in a conversation. At least on the cell phone your eyes are looking out the windows.

morcia and Troll made some good points.

However, I definitely disagree with both of you on the point about listening to the radio. First of all, they put radios in cars for a reason. Second of all, I feel it actually keeps drivers more alert. You know, upbeat music rather than falling asleep to the sound of silence (and not the song).

I also disagree with cell phone usage while driving. I think hands free should be required though. People need their hands free to USE THEIR SIGNALS!!!, turn on windshield wipers or occasionally have both hands on the wheel. However, if you think cell phone use while driving is wrong, how about we make our passengers ride in the trunk? We certainly don\’t want to engage in a dialogue that requires us to think while driving. Or we could duct tape the kids mouths shut. :)

Jewel – i wasnt clear enough in my initial comment – i more meant reaching and adjusting a radio while in motion, not necessarily just listening – but bear in mind you need to be able to hear your enviromnment around you too.

Re. in car conversation – the same common sense applies – yes people in the car will have conversations but it is distracting also – i personally keep conversation to a minimum when i drive – i usually dont even participate if i am driving and there are more than one passenger in the car – i focus on the road. too bad more people dont realize how much more of a distraction this is.

    Good points!

I tend to be a bit more sarcastic in my responses. It\’s my nature and not meant to be rude, but rather, funny. Duct tape on kids\’ mouths? I mean, really… scotch tape peels off much easier. ;) See?

Anyway, I agree people are very easily distracted. Not sure about tuning the radio, etc. BUT I was listening to the radio (at a reasonable volume) and they were talking about this very topic. The radio personality said that some survey or research (I missed the first part) said that driving & playing with the radio was MORE distracting than talking on a cell or putting on makeup. Ha ha… maybe it\’s distracting, but more so than those? Anyway, my radio controls are on my steering wheel which is pretty cool.

By the way, it\’s nice to debate with someone who is level headed and doesn\’t sling unnecessary insults (necessary ones are great!). Oh, and I like that you actually *read* what I posted.

    Thanks- Happy Friday! :)

Naturally the cell phone companies DON’T want a law like this passed! It would keep people from possibly using extra minutes that they could get paid for. As for people shaving or eating, I personally don’t see that everyday or more than 1 or 2 drivers doing it in one commute.

I have had this cell phone pet peeve for quite sometime. So much so that I went as far as purchasing a domain to make drivers aware of this nonsense and try to get some attention to the matter. Feel free to check the site out and pass it along to others who share this common interest. Maybe together we can help make the roads safer for all of us.
