Similar Wrecks Reported at Site of Ga. Fatal Bus Crash

    Early this morning, it was announced that additional warning signage, etc. will be installed tomorrow. Better late than never is the motto of the GA DOT.

    maybe the intersection/crash ares is not faulty and that many people (like catherine) are just stupid, don\’t know how to dirve or don\’t pay ENOUGH attention.

    Stupidity has nothing to do with this one, believe me, and unless you drive in Atlanta every day, perhaps you shouldn\’t be pointing fingers…here\’s a section of the article in the paper:

    \”The changes also seem to address the top of the ramp, where a driver several years ago apparently mistook the exit ramp for the northbound entrance ramp, went the wrong way on I-75 for several miles, causing several wrecks and killing a man. The entrance and exit lanes at the top of the ramp are conjoined, with only arrows painted on the pavement to define the entrance versus the exit ramp. As of last week there was no \”do not enter\” sign, or any other sign, on Northside Drive for the exit ramp; only several yards down the ramp did signs appear indicating that a driver entering the exit ramp would be going the wrong way.

    Measures to be implemented at the I-75 southbound HOV ramp at Northside Drive, the site of the crash, include:

    • Adding the word \”EXIT\” after the HOV diamond at the bottom of the exit ramp

    • Widening some of the lines painted on the road

    • Making the \”STOP AHEAD\” signs on the ramp bigger, 48 inches

    • Marking \”STOP AHEAD\” on the pavement

    • Adding a raised concrete island in the median on Northside Drive

    DOT spokeswoman Crystal Paulk-Buchanan said the DOT expected that the painting could be done within three weeks.

    The department is also looking at more complicated changes that would take longer to complete, such as flashing lights or overhead signs. These changes would require an engineering review.\”

    While it might be true that people don\’t know how to drive (amen!) and that they don\’t pay ENOUGH attention (amen!) let\’s not make it harder by making exit ramps, etc. confusing. I traveled to NJ in 2005 and often they had exit signs situated in such an odd way that if you had followed the sign you would plunge over an \”overpass.\” Paying MORE attention definitely helps but it\’s not necessarily a matter of stupidity. In Florida (where I live) exits have been confusing as well. I agree though that people should pay more attention AND the states should make things easier for those less fortunate (in the brain department) and to just make the roads less confusing.

    Usually I take most issues with a grain of ssalt. However after driving through Atlanta (and being from out of state), it is fairly easy to confuse the car pool exit lanes with the normal traffic lane, especially at night when the traffic is lighter.

    Hopefully the new signage will help…

    All the DOT needs to do for a start is paint and exit market on the road. How expensive can that be? The exit sign is now after you leave the HOV…how dumb.

    I know there are a lot of careless drivers. I am presuming that the claims adjuster has seen that exit ramp. I have-it is very poorly designed.

    For the sake of argument;however-I don\’t think \”stupidity\” in this instance warranted innocent passengers having their lives cut short.
