Read this, it may give you a new prospective on the subject:
I went to work for a Non-Standard Insurance Company approx. 2 years ago. At first there was a great many of our clients whom only came in once a year to purchase the cheapest minimum coverage of PIP and PD possible just to renew their tags and or Driver Licenses and than let the policy lapse due to non-payment. (A few of these clients are well to do people not wanting to carry insurance.)
This is known as “working the system”. These people are quite proficient; (This is what they do, not just with their Auto Insurance.)
    But…
All of this has changed dramatically these last two years. With The State of Florida Division of Motor Vehicles working closely with the States Tag Agencies and with all Auto Insurance Companies reporting lapsed policies (as required by Law) are actively suspending the license of those with no insurance on vehicles registered in their name.
    Known as the NON-PIP Suspension:
The first offence is a $150.00 dollar fine, the second offence is a $250.00 dollar fine and the third is a $500.00 dollar fine. After that you must go three full years with out being suspended for non-insurance or pay $500.00 each time until you do.
This has been very effective. This has had a great impact on our clients that would rather “work the system” and go with out insurance.
Granted they’re are still those that swap vehicles on their auto policy allot, but you must realize that they are less likely to drive vehicles without a tag than one that has no insurance.
(For those that have found the loop hole of swapping insurance on tags on multiple vehicles and driving for 30 days on non-insured tags before swapping back. We must leave this up to the Tag Agencies and our Police Department to monitor. Once the client has had their policy more than 60 days our hands (insurance companys) are tied.)
With out mandatory PIP and PD Auto Insurance this cooperation between the State’s DMV and Tag Agency would surely lose ground on the attempt to crack down on uninsured motorist.
Floridians need PIP – need mandatory auto insurance – need Fraud investigators. Un-insured motorist Bodily Insurance is very expensive, substantially more expensive than PIP. (Un-insured motorist Bodily Insurance is basically purchasing the un-insured drivers coverage for your self.)
With PIP gone, your health insurance rates will go up as well, substantially more than the few dollars you will save by letting PIP sunset.
We should keep the PIP (personal injury protection) make B/I (Bodily Injury) mandatory!
    That’s my opinion,
    Licensed Florida Agent
P.S. Ever been in a slight at-fault fender bender accident and the other driver is uninsured? First thing they do is jump out and claim whip-lash. Well I have and once I explained that that first 10,000. comes out of their own pocket, because they are un-insured, they suddenly feel fine.
