I don\’t need the government to hurricane proof my house. The best protection you can buy doesn\’t cost a dime – it\’s called \”common sense.\” Don\’t live on or near the water. There – I just saved the state of Florida God only knows how much money. Oh, I forgot. The politicians don\’t have any common sense. They all live on or near the water. We all have to pay for that. Now who\’s stupid?

Should read another give away program for the wealthy who reside on coastal areas in harms way provided by those who choose to remain safely inland. We seem to be subsidizing these freinds of those who wish to run for governor alot through the Citizens Recoupement Fee and now prioritizing by hurricane exposed areas as to who will receive the grants. Come on guys its a supplement to the contributors of the campaign war chest.

If you looked into it, you would find out that the program is essentially means-tested — i.e., any home worth more than $500k is not eligible. That\’s middle-class in Florida, not rich.

It makes even less common sense to require FEMA to pick up the pieces when Florida is battled by storms. At least Florida is paying for it instead of the Feds, and at least it is preventative.

    1) Florida paying
    2) Preventative

More common sense than a repeat of New Orleans.

Will insurance companies have access to these reports and ratings of the home\’s current ability to withstand hurricanes? If the homeowner cannot afford to make the suggested changes (even with a matching grant up to $5,000) and the rating is less than spectacular, will the few carriers still writing have yet another excuse to surcharge rates or decline coverage?
How was the year constructed decided? The older homes seem to be constructed better than the newer ones.

Good question! I guess that since $500K is middle income in Florida, it won\’t be a problem coming up with the addtional $5K (see posted comment below from Yes, Stupid). As far as some type of data base, you can bet there will be one. What that means only time will tell.
