Fla. Bill Requires Automated Fire Sprinkler Systems in Nursing Homes by 2008

May 6, 2005

The Florida Legislature has taken a step towards protecting Florida’s seniors in approving a bill that affects fire safety in nursing homes.
The legislation requires all of the state’s nursing homes to have automated fire sprinkler systems by Dec. 31, 2008.

There are approximately 35 nursing homes affected, mostly older facilities, including one in Pasco County, four in Pinellas County and one in Polk County.

The legislation, House Bill 1267, heads to Gov. Bush for his signature.

If signed, a loan guarantee program would be available.
The nursing homes without fire sprinkler systems represent 4,200 beds, which represent about five percent of Florida’s nursing home beds.
