What’s so bad about raising prices during a crisis? It should be a market-driven price. Should motels maintain their $40 per day rates when people are clammering to rent the rooms? At $40 per day, many families will rent several rooms, creating a shortage. Should contractors price their repairs at “break even” when there is abundant work? This whole concept smacks of manipulation of something that should be driven by the market.

Hi- I am just commenting on the situation with price gouging. I passed by the gas station I usaully go to in Fairhope Alabama yesterday, and noticed that the gas was $2.11. I went to get gas today thinking i would get the same price, but it had jumped signifigantly to $2.30. The Gas station is a BP at the intersection of Twin Beech and Highway 98. People should not be able to get away with this, gas is already expensive as it is.
    Thank you very much.

The Days Inn in Tucaloosa, Alabama is telling guests that they have to leave tomorrow Thursday Sept. 1st because fans (that are coming from their un touched homes)have booked the rooms for this weekends game. My 80 year old father is amoung them. He needs to stay. He has no power or water at his home in Mississippi. He is on a nebulizer for breathing. I live in California. Help me please. The general manager has told me that the reservations were made before Katrina hit. Like that matters.

I guess they want a law suit. Help

How amazing is this? In this day and age you would think the “game” would be postponed for a more appropriate time considering the devestation Katrina has caused.
My suggestion: make a plea to all sports teams that have scheduled games in the south, especially affected areas. The hotels/motels are so badly needed for those misplaced by Katrina and there are only so many shelters and emergency housing available. These “games” can be played anytime. Re-scheduling happens all the time for various reasons, this surely would qualify.

One cultural difference I thought between us and the rest of the world is we take care of our own. Except in this case. Why – because money outweighs indivdual needs. Where is the love and support here?

It’s incredible to me that a stupid football game would be more important than the health and well being of someone needing shelter and help after what has just hit the east coast. The general manager needs his head examined if he thinks that what he’s doing is right – god help him in his time of need. And people WILL remember the name and location of your Inn as well.

I guess a little compasssion is out of the question and the almighty dollar rules.

Why not have a little heart and take a tax deduction for helping these desparate people.

I’m appalled at the lack of concern others have for our own people. We will send millions of dollars to help other countries, but when devastation hits in our own back yard we turn our backs. I have no ideas to better the situation, but surely I will not be watching the game!!! Why contribute more money to the ones who don’t need it, and obviously don’t care.

Any respected hotel would make room to assist and support our American survivors from this natural disaster. Although inconvenient for the hotel and guests, among others, when it comes to a significant disaster that impacts us on American soil, every body needs to bite the bullet and help our fellow Americans work towards getting their lives back together. Anything less is unacceptable.
