February 18, 2004

Miami Children’s Hospital kicked off National Child Passenger Safety Week with the unveiling of the United Automobile Insurance Group Child Passenger Safety Fitting Station, the first permanent indoor fitting station in the United States. Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation, United Automobile Insurance Group (www.uaig.net), and Safe Kids have formed a partnership to fund the United Automobile Insurance Group Child Passenger Safety Fitting Station at Miami Children’s Hospital.

“A study by the National Safe Kids Campaign showed that 85 percent of all child safety seats are installed incorrectly,” said Sandra Iglesias, vice president of United Automobile Insurance Group. “United Automobile Insurance Group is honored to do whatever we can to keep children safe and healthy.”

According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, car crashes are the leading cause of death for children 0-14 years of age. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, child safety seats reduce injury by 71 percent for infants less than 1 year of age, and by 54 percent for toddlers between 1 and 6 years of age.

“It is vital for parents to take the necessary steps to protect their children,” added Deise Granado-Villar, director of Preventative Medicine at Miami Children’s Hospital. “It is very important that South Florida families protect their children in the car. This program provides parents the opportunity to learn how to correctly install child car seats.”
