Albuquerque, N.M., police say their officers will be working overtime after Thanksgiving in anticipation of the Black Friday shopping rush.
Police spokesman Tanner Tixier tells KOAT-TV that stores and shoppers on Friday can represent a “target-rich environment” for opportunistic thieves.
With more than 60,000 people expected at area malls and stores, Tixier says police are concerned about shoplifting, car burglaries and robberies.
Police plan to put extra officers out on patrol or working as security or undercover.
Lt. Tim Espinosa says police will also have cars with GPS set up as bait.
Authorities say shoppers are advised to not leave anything valuable in their vehicles, especially new purchases. Also, shoppers should leave car doors locked and windows rolled up. In addition, do not put shopping bags down while paying.
