Texas Man Sentenced Workers’ Comp Double Dipping Scam

September 18, 2014

A Travis County district court sentenced Rodney Williams of Seabrook, Texas for workers’ compensation fraud-related charges, according to an announcement by Texas Mutual Insurance Company. The court sentenced Williams to deferred adjudication and ordered him to pay $6,156 in restitution to Texas Mutual.

Williams reported a job-related injury while working as a welder for Vorte Industries, Inc. of Alvin, Texas. He claimed he was unable to work as a result of the injury, and Texas Mutual began paying workers’ compensation benefits to him. Texas Mutual uncovered evidence that Williams was working as a skilled laborer at a Houston company and a League City company while receiving income benefits due to his alleged disability.

Investigators call this type of fraud double dipping because the claimant collects benefits for being unable to work when he or she is actually gainfully employed.
