Ingrid Not Expected to Cause Big Problems in Texas

September 17, 2013

Schools in Brownsville are closed and shrimping boats are taking cover on the Texas border as Tropical Storm Ingrid moves through Mexico.

Ingrid weakened to form a hurricane after making landfall Monday. The storm came ashore near La Pesca, about 200 miles south of Brownsville, which had already received an inch of rain by sunrise.

National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Miller says Ingird isn’t expected to cause major problems in the area. He says there could be some localized flooding around Brownsville and about another inch of rain Monday.

City officials had passed out sandbags this weekend as a precaution.

Also this weekend, the U.S. Coast Guard and Border Patrol escorted nearly 200 vessels in the Gulf of Mexico to safety in anticipation of large swells and high tides.
