Southeast Texas on Record Heat Pace for 2012

May 22, 2012

Houston and several nearby southeast Texas cities are in record heat territory for the year.

Over the nearly first five months of 2012, Houston’s average temperature is 66.9 degrees. That’s the warmest ever since recordkeeping began 120 years ago, topping the 66.5-degree average posted in 1911.

Galveston’s been keeping track of weather for 137 years and its 68.3 degrees is 1.3 degrees above the current record from 1882. And College Station’s 65.2 degrees is a tick over the 65.1-degree mark from 1911. College Station weather records go back 110 years.

National Weather Service forecaster Charles Roeseler tells the Houston Chronicle the lack of winter this year and warmer overnight low temperatures are responsible for the overall average temperature jumps.
