    This girl and her parents deserve nothing. The school had it’s polcies and she chose to disregard them. What more could it have done within reason? The verdict is excessive and should have been set aside. Good to hear it’s being appealed.

    Jester, you ask what more the school could have done within reason.

    Maybe treat the victim of a sex crime with compassion and support instead of treating them as a criminal and kicking them out of the school.

    The laws in TX are clear. If you are a teacher, clergy, doctor or counselor and have a sexual relationship with someone under your care it is called abuse. Considering the VICTIM was under aged, the crime is compounded.

    I’m sure the school does have policies and the teachers are expected to follow and enforce them. The one in authority is to blame for this not the student. The school failed when they did not follow the law.

    BTW, sex between a 34 year old and a 16 year old is not an “affair” – it’s child abuse and I find the title of this article offensive.

      @Mike
      You find the TITLE of the article offensive??!? Seriously? How do you get through each day if your skin is so thin? In my opinion, the school should’t be help responsible for the actions of a teacher. I hope this gets overturned. If anyone should be sued or fined (or in this case jailed) it should be the teacher. Oh common sense, where art thou?

    Geoff – the school wasn’t sued because of the teacher’s actions – they were sued for their actions – punishing a crime victim for the actions of the perpetrator. And we should all consider it an offense to see the word ‘affair’ used to describe a crime of this sort.

    While I agree the teacher should be held criminally negligent for his role, this is a 16 year old girl who is voluntarily having a realtionship with this teacher and the jury gives her 1 million for loss of enjoymnet of life in the future plus all the other millions. What does this teach her? Bad behavior begets you a boat load of money? I don’t blame the school for asking her to leave. I’m sure the promise of litigation coming down the pike was there. I’m sure the school had their own code of conduct for the students to follow in place.
