A 3-year-old child’s death was caused by one of the tornadoes that struck Oklahoma earlier this week, raising the state death toll from those storms to 10, a state official said Thursday.
Cherokee Ballard, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma medical examiner’s office, said that the child was found dead and that the child was killed by a tornado. She said she didn’t know where the child’s body was found or the child’s name or gender.
Authorities scheduled a news conference for later Thursday.
Searchers have been scouring the Piedmont area for a 3-year-old boy who went missing when a tornado destroyed his home Tuesday. The boy’s 15-month-old brother was killed and his mother and another sibling were seriously injured.
The search area spanned three counties and extended as far as Guthrie, 30 miles from the Piedmont, a suburb northwest of Oklahoma City.
Dive teams from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol searched Falcon Lake near the boy’s home, and helicopters were used to look for him.
The cluster of storms that spawned the deadly tornadoes killed at least 16 people in three states on Tuesday and Wednesday.
