Sometimes, judges and juries in this country seem intellectually impotent when it comes to giving away other people’s money. A seatbelt is not a 100% guarantee of safety after your negligent driving causes your van to overturn. Passive restraints are designed to protect people from “normal” accidents. A rollover at high speeds is not “normal”. “if” the seatbelt did malfunction, there should have been some comparative component to the award. Seems the key issue is could the injury that caused the paralysis have been prevented had the seatbelt not malfunctioned.
