Nationwide is doing a good thing. More companies should do something similar, particularly in high vehicle theft areas. These thieves should be taken off the street. Who knows, they may be able to bag some illegals at the same time, although in Houston they will probably let them go.

Thank You Nationwide for being on our side, and the HPD, too.

Glad they are using the bait cars to catch car thieves. However, car theft is such a low level crime to the courts. Catch them all you want, until the penalty is increased, car theft will be lucrative.

Agree with the comments about low level crime. If it were not for the fact that people leave their cars unlocked, or valuables in plain sight, the theft level might be lower. Various police departments try to educate drivers by putting courtesy tickets on their vehicles parked in retail parking lots. The attitude seems to be that it cannot happen to them. The numbers tell the truth about how foolish car owners are.

I agree with you Bubba. And why do people leave valuables in plain sight? Even parked in their driveways is not safe!!

I think this car theft is looked at as an insurance issue instead of a crime. Car thieves left valuable information in our insured’s recovered vehicle. No follow up by the PD. Company just paid the claim.

The bait car program is just one of those feel good PR tactics.

In the grand scheme of police work, solving murders probably takes precedence, but HPD really fumbled when there were two deaths caused by an “allegedly” intoxicated driver, then a third died later. The driver left the country soon after the accident. Some car owners are at fault for some of the vehicle thefts, but the PD MUST take when a drunken driver kills innocent people. Just too much paperwork, ya’ think?
