“That’s almost twice the depth of Deepwater Horizon, which has released millions gallons of oil into the Gulf since it exploded and burned.”

Someone should point out to the journalist that even if 60,000 gallons were being spilled today (which is the high side of the estimates) it would have taken almost 17 days to reach a million. If you use the 5000 gallons figure that the government and BP are using then it would 200 days for the spill to reach 1M gallons.

As bad as this disaster is, the media screwing up the reporting isn’t helping.

The inept administration composed of the Energy Department with their 17,000 useless employees, Mineral Management Agency and the Interior Department should be defunded by Congress. This happened on their watch. Perhaps they were too busy downloading porn like the SEC. When the government gets this big, they can’t respond and there is way too much red tape and regulations. There was no Safety enforcement after an inspection of this rig just prior to this accident. The country needs the energy and drilling needs to be done both on and off shore. We just don’t need this government inaction to any situation that comes up.

The figure used is 5000 barrels of oil a day, a barrel = 55 gallons, so about 275,000 gallons per day x 4 days = 1,100,000 gallons.

The Coast Guard is estimating 210,000 gallons per day, so in 5 days it would be 1,050,000 gallons.

It seems as if the reporter is correct in stating millions of gallons of oil have already been released.

It is not 5,000 gallons a day that is being lost, it is 5,000 barrels – or much more. A barrel of oil is 42 gallons. So the lowest estimate (BP’s) is 200,000 + gallons a day. One estimate is that we arer looking at 15 times that. So it is somewhere from less than a day to 5 days to reach a million gallons.

Stop picking fly _hit out of pepper. Who cares exactly how much oil is polluting the Gulf. It’s a freaking mess either way. These lawsuits are a day late and a dollar short. How come nobody takes action to PREVENT this kind of SNAFU?

ok, confused, if this is 150 mi’s offshore, what gives us the right to control these platforms? is this not considered in international waters?

also, after this disaster, i would think they would come of with at least 2 if not 3 plans to handle a situation like this. we can only hope that the next attempt to stop this leak will work.
