Isn’t it now illegal for personal information to be released or sold to 3rd parties? Is this another law that doesn’t hold true for governments whether local or otherwise? More disgusted every day.

Do privacy laws matter anymore? States should not be able to sell personal info to corporations, attorneys or anyone else. I believe Texas has been doing similar things. I have received unsolicited quotes on Auto Insurance from Allstate and they knew what kind of cars I had etc. They were purchasing ownership info from Texas Dept of Public Safety and they knew entirely too much about my personal info. This is a betrayal of the public trust and an invasion of privacy.

These are being sold to insurance companies for people that have applied for insurance or getting a quote and as an agent I am responsible for obtaining the applicant or insured their authorization prior to obtaining their Motor Vehicle Report in order to give them coverage based on their driving record. This is generally done through the insurance company’s rating program or through Choice Point. This information is not used or sold for any other purpose other than acquiring the applicant’s driving record in order to rate, issue and renew auto insurance. This is a misleading article.

Your article is extremely mis-leading. The insurance company has to already have the personal information in the first place in order to purchase the driving record. The insurance company is not buying perosnal information, it is buying driving histories. The vendors involved are merely pass-thru service burueaus who provide the technology. They do NOT resell the data per existing law.
Your article will make people believe the state is selling personal information to resellers, which it is NOT!!!!!

So this information is sold only to insurance companies? The vendors are prohibited by law to sell the information to any other business other than an insurance company?

    Keith,
Actually about 92% of the 700,000 records sold a day in the US are purchased by insurance companies. They are by far the biggest users. The 2nd biggest user are employers hiring drivers, such as trucking companies. The DPPA (fed law) distinguishes 14 permissible uses when records can be sold with personal information. DPPA forbids the purchase of personal information for marketing lists unless a licensed driver wants to “opt-in” which is virtually non existant.
To see DPPA go to http://www.mvrdecoder.com/
    Hope thsi helps.
