This award is a pittance but still should not have been paid. This guy wanted to be a cop and assumed the risks that went with the job. Why should he be paid for experiencing a routine event in the life of a police officer?

He was suffering from PTSD and it was filed under worker’s comp. That is a very real disorder that people in this field and the military suffer from. I think he just wanted his treatment covered.

I have to say that in the land of multi-million dollar lawsuits for spilling coffee on yourself, it certainly doesn’t sound unreasonable to ask for $13K to cover the costs associated with getting counseling for a job related incident.

Diane, I’d hesitate to use your line of reasoning if the tables were turned- for instance…

Construction workers shouldn’t get benefits for getting hurt at a jobsite, since they “should have known” that was a risk of the job.

Insurance agents shouldn’t be compensated if involved in auto accident on the way to meet a client- they “should have known” driving was part of the job.

    … shall I go on?

A 5 hour stand-off against someone with a military high-powered rifle is routine?

What kind of neighborhood do you live in?
