Why does the US Government (we the people) have to pay AGAIN for the irresponsible residents who didn’t leave. The residents were ordered to evacuate DAYS BEFORE Katrina hit. The Government has already paid $billions to help rebuild damaged property in NO. insurance has also paid $billions. Why pay families of those who lost their lives, when those same families never bothered to evacuate those victims before the storm?

I am sick to death of New Orleans trying through continued court wrangling to get Federal dollars to fix a problem that the State and local government knew about and ignored. Blaming the Corps of Engineers is absurd and should be thrown out unless the city and state can prove they took any level of responsible action – they can’t!

Are the sick, frail and elderly residents who just plain were unable to leave the area “freeloaders?” Did they all have the financial means and physical strength to pick up and leave and pay for transportation, meals and lodging for God knows how long?

Remember, the lucky ones got to stay at the Superdome.

I think Bush was blamed for the FEMA response – This only talks about why this whole thing happened in the first place.

    Am I wrong??

    Was the FEMA response good?

The City of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana failed for years to address the problem and then waited for the Federal Government to spend hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars. No one wants to see anyone loose their life or home but it’s clear that this is less a Federal problem than a state and local government problem.
Attempts by the City of New Orleans to get a Federal Court to order the Corps of Engineers to pay for a restoration are a sham and a disgrace.
