Damaged Southeast Texas Apartments Evacuated 11 Months After Ike

An evacuation in Southeast Texas nearly 11 months after Hurricane Ike is being linked to the storm.

An engineer determined three apartment buildings in La Marque appear to be twisting on their foundations and risk collapsing.

Bill Manning, certified by the Texas Department of Insurance to do windstorm inspections, speculated Ike damaged the 41-year-old complex on Sept. 13.

The Galveston County Daily News reported that more than one dozen people were part of the initial evacuation from the most damaged area of Cedar Ridge Apartments.

Manning made his recommendations in a letter to La Marque city officials.

Property manager Joyce Hill, who worked on relocation Aug. 10, said everything possible would be done to “minimize the negative impact” on residents.

La Marque is about 10 miles northwest of Galveston.
