OSHA Clears Oklahoma Tire Plant in Worker’s Death

March 5, 2009

Federal investigators say Lawton, Okla.’s Goodyear tire plant won’t be cited in connection with an accident that killed a worker there in September.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Todd says the agency has completed its investigation and found no evidence the company violated any safety codes.

Steve Mason died after being caught in a piece of tire building equipment at the plant on Sept. 19. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he died three days later.

Mason’s death was the second fatal accident at the Lawton plant since it opened in 1979. The first happened in 2005, when a 49-year-old labor contractor got caught in a piece of equipment.
