The first decision that should have been made was that no new building or reconstruction would be allowed in any area below sea level. Bring in dirt and fill to raise the neighborhoods and then build to state of the art hurricane standards. The way things are going, taxpayers and insurers will be paying for this stuff all over again in the future.
I agree w/Pat. There’s no question that federal monies are being wasted in a fruitless battle to protect a city that should never have been built in the first place because of “southern political pressures”. Piling up dirt won’t protect a city that is below sea level. We shouldn’t be throwing good money after bad either. What happens the next time?…….and there will be a next time. The truth is, New Orleans doesn’t contribute much to the US economy and no significant employers would ever build there. It’s a hurricane target that is nothing but a liability and burden on an already weak economy.
…this says it all and is an anology for the current mindset of entirely too many people in both business and government:
“What we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history,” said Tim Doody, the president of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East
