The reason smoking has decreased is the cost of cigarettes not the government programs or prohibiting smoking in the workplace. Of course the high taxes were suppose to pay for health care so the Nannies are probably upset that smoking has declined. Now the government should ban drinking alcohol in bars and resturants and people would stop drinking. Right?

Oh and lets ban food with fat in public. Oh I forgot, they are already working on that.

What I would like to see are the statistics (for NY & Countrywide) of how may business establishments (bars, restaurants, etc.) that have closed down due to a lack of clients.

I’m not anti smoking, people. I’m anti smoking around me. Just because I choose to go to a bar or restaurant should I be in clouds of smoke? When I go to a mall should I come home smelly from all that puffing? I smoke cigars, but I do it on my property, outside and don’t expose other people to my smoke. If you can’t go anywhere for a few minutes without having to light up, perhaps you have the problem, not me. I was at a mall that doesn’t allow smoking recently and saw a young mother with a tiny baby in her arms puffing away. Smokers seem to have little regard for others. It’s a legal product, but you need to stop smelling up the the world because you have a habit. I’m sure I will take a few hits on my opinion here, but it is my opinion.

I agree with you about smoke in restaurants, Nobody. But bars I view a little differently.

I guess I feel like bars are places where we can let our vices out (drinking, gambling -in some states-, swearing, smoking, etc.) so if I’m going to a bar, I pretty much /expect/ the smoke to be part of the atomosphere. Do I like it? No, but it’s the nature of the business where adult beverages and the establishments that serve them are concerned.

Smoking makes me gag, and for the most part, the smokers I know personally try to respect my air where their habit is concerned.

Banning smoking in offices, shopping malls, restaurants or any place where kids are permitted and expected to be is a good idea. Makes a lot of sense.

But banning smoking in bars or other adult establishments… I don’t know. I think that’s going a little far and it can and has hurt some businesses. However, if a bar wants to be voluntarily smoke-free, they might find it gives them a boost in traffic from people like you, Suzi or myself who would prefer such a place over one that allows smoking.

I would not disagree with your comments. I think it’s a bit much to ban smokers from these types of places. However, what percentage of people smoke? If I am a nonsmoker I will not go to these places so the owner is eliminating a large percentage of their potential customers. I think it should be a business decision rather than a governmental one. What about the employees? You can say they have the choice to work their or not, but this will increase their chance of illness and that goes back to WC claims. It’s not so simple to say it should just be up to the owner.
