Not to downplay gunsafes and trigger locks, but what must come before all else is education. No gun in my parents house was ever stored in a safe or with a trigger lock, and they were never messed with. I’m not saying that’s the safest way to go, but it was education that kept us from getting hurt, not locking the guns up.

I’m all for promoting gun safety. That’s why I go over everything with everyone I shoot with everytime, even if I’ve shot with them before. There’s no reason to get stupid with a gun.

And why were the kids allowed to play with a real gun? I had toy guns to play cops and robbers and such games with. I knew where the real guns were kept and I knew where the ammo was too. I also knew that my parents would kill me if I touched them without permission. Just as my kids knew not to touch my guns.

Showing kids a video isn’t going to do jack squat for gun safety. Parents are the key to keeping kids alive.

Most trigger locks are less than $10.

Harbor Freight sells a small gun/pistol vault for $99.

If you look online, you can probably find a rifle safe for less than $200. (Try eBay or craigslist.)

Considering those prices, there’s no excuse for any gun owner NOT to have at least one or both of those things for their guns.

Of course education is #1. I completely agree. I didn’t mean to imply it wasn’t.

My dad, much to my chagrin, would disrupt my Barbie time to take me to the gun range a couple weekends a year since I was about 5. And every single time, we talked about the dos and don’ts of handling guns.

While education is the biggest part of the equation, unfortunately we all know there are parents who seem to skip that part. If they’re too lame to educate, the least they can do is lock up. Even parents who educate should lock up, in case of curious, unsupervised kids; or in case of a burglary where guns could end up in the wrong hands.
