Another brilliant idea to milk the Katrina mess. Since when should someone get a new home and a $50,000 “grant” because a storm destroyed their former dwelling? The government is spending billions to rebuild this hurricane target that sits below sea level. Now it’s going to give the indigent population free money for new homes? What a crock. Taxpayers should be outraged.

“a faith based group sees a golden opportunity for home ownership…..” Guess what folks, this smacks of another welfare dole. It’s no secret the population in this are is black and rented their dwellings before Katrina. Suddently Uncle Sam rides in handing out $50K checks to live in a new $150K home? What’s wrong with this picture? There’s no incentive to work, earn money, pay a mortgage, buy insurance, an pay taxes. This enables people to stay in their comfort zone and keep belling up to the welfare trough. This kind of nonsense doesn’t happen anywhere else in the world.

I thought we already bought this state!

We don’t need to buy it again to give it away!

Just make it mandatory that all the property owners that are not sure if they want to rebuild or not to make a decision by say 5/1/08 & then any properties that have been bought out by the State / Feds or whoever can have an open auction & sell the properties as is to the highest bidders so they can get some $ back that was spent out on the buy back. Set a minimum opening bid so that only serious buyers will be making the purchases.

Then it will be up to those that buy the properties to develop them.

The people that lost thier income from the Government for all the section 8 housing payments they got (no wonder they were all renting – Uncle Sam paid the Mortgage) & they were to cheap to buy their insurance at least got something for their property.

And finally maybe this mess can get cleaned up…

I think Eli and Dred have hit the nail on the head.

Here in New Orleans, a vast percentage of the population will never be any more than they are. Someone needs to draw a line and STOP MOVING IT. As long as we enable, people will take advantage. We (you, me and the rest of the tax paying citizens of this country) continue to pay for those who will not do for themselves. Note, I did not say “Cannot”, I said “Will not” do for themselves.

People did not protect themselves before the storm, and every agency has come in and rescued those who made decisions to be irresponsible for years and years. These are most of the same people who are subsidized in every facet of their lives. Meanwhile the ones who did take care to protect themselves actually lost comparatively.

Road Home is the perfect case in point. A company is being paid a ridiculous amount of money to manage a toilet bowl of a program to give un and underinsured people money to rebuild. Again, reward for not being insured. Hmmmmm. Does this reward responsibility? The Road Home check comes as “free money”. In other words, the recipient of the check is supposed to use the money to rebuild, but there is nothing in place to regulate that process. The fact is that most of these people will never see a sum of money that great at once in their lifetime so it’s like hitting the lottery. You should see the number of new or slightly used new cars in this city. The driver may not have a reasonable roof over their head, but you should see their ride! The bottom line is that irresponsible people will not become responsible because you put money in their hands.

These programs do nothing but encourage entitlement to those who take, take, take from every agency they can. Can we not stop protecting these people? Can we not make it more advantageous for them to work and act as productive citizens rather than be the sponges that they are? When do those of us who are responsible, productive parts of society benefit somewhat rather than just support the others? Jobs are plentiful here but businesses cannot get employees. Where else can you get a job flipping fast food burgers starting at $10.00 / hour? Are you kidding me? People are just lazy, and those of us who work hard continue to pay.

I hope someone does come in and do something with the areas where home after home and business after business remains untouched 2.5 years later. The city is depressing and needs help. Green space would be a much more asthetically pleasing sight then what is here now.
