Are we a nation of bad laws or a nation of law breakers? If 3/4 of a million people are driving illegally in Texas, it should be apparent to legislators that Texas driving law is flawed. Drunk driving laws pushed by MADD in this country are a joke. MADD is an organization with prohibition as their goal. 3,000 in fines for causing no harm to another human being is a complete miscarriage of justice for Texans. Wake up Texas voters
Sounds like time to use a collection agency. 70% is better than nothing. The program sounds intriguing, though the article doesn’t say if it’s had the desired affect.
The issue is not the MADD laws, it is a large number of drivers ignoring the law to have insurance and drive safely.
The drivers convicted of DUI have the highest rate of paying the fine and surcharge.
These surcharges are not retroactive. After a certian date, drivers convicted of a list of traffic offenses are surcharged.
By your tone, you are against MADD and the change of attitude of society in general to stand up against drunk driving. That is very poor refelection on you as a professional in this industry.
The solution to the blatant disregard for the law (just like in the old wild west) needs to be swift and severe. Issue bench warrants for every irresponsible and arrogant misfit with an outstanding balance and put them in jail until they pay 100% of the fine plus interest. That’s only fair. There should be no amnesty for people who obviously have nothing but contempt for the law.
Sure glad you are not in charge of law enforcement!
I have to disagree, but only because by putting them in jail, it ends up costing the taxpayers more money than if they just leave the guy alone.
I do have an alternate option that I thought of as I read your post though…
Round ’em up, take ’em out to somewhere that needs actual labor done – like Louisiana – make them work a 10 hour day, earning minimum wage, deducting the cost for transportation to & from the jobsite, for housing, meals, income taxes & social security… that should leave them with approximately $5.00 per day that can be applied to their fines & they remain until the fine is paid & they actually paid for their keep during the incarceration too.
Kinda like a work to pay your debt to society type program…
It’s a program that isn’t even having the desired effects. People aren’t driving better.
And, We’ll see how long it is before it is challenged in court. People get a ticket and they pay their fine to the courts for that violation. How can you then say, ok, you have more fine to pay after you’ve gone to court and paid your fine. It won’t last. It’s just another money grab.
If you are a responsible driver in Texas you should have no problem. The fines + surcharges are for those that choose not to obey traffic laws in the State. This has been a problem here for many years, with a large percentage of the drivers coming from other states (migrating) to find work in Texas. Then there is the illegals who come for the same reason, looking for work, to support their families & make a better life for themselves.
There are so many different cultures in Texas, but the people here really do want the same thing. Well, except those that came after Katrina hit, they didn’t want to come, but they didn’t want to lose everything either & be forced from their homes where they were comfortable with their monthly government checks.
However, I would bet the majority of minor traffic infractions & preventable accidents come from the lower classes who do not carry insurance, who probably get monthly checks, and have no drive or ambition to better themselves, but find it much easier to mooch off the govenrment (that’s me & you) & not pay fines if they do something wrong because their excuse is they can’t afford it, when if their monthly checks were garnished to pay for fines & fees they incur, they might try to pay better attention – I said might!
Anyway, Texas Drivers are paying the ultimate prices & those that can do & those than can’t don’t….

There are fines for running red lights, stop signs, speeding, etc. that cause no harm either. Just complaining about the price?

Add the 750,000 to the # of people driving in Texas with No Insurance or history of ever having had a TX. drivers Lisc.? Now we’re talking !!

You have a point re. the cost to taxpayers. I support your alternative plan.

So on that note! Don’t Mess With Texas!
