They routinely are forced to drive well in excess of 100 mph. They do not only do this to chase speeders. In the western half of the state where it can be 50 miles or more between towns they have to get to calls a.s.a.p. Driving over 100 mph is a lot different than driving under 80 mph. Cars respond differently and so do drivers. There are several test tracks and racetracks in Texas where these Troopers can hone their skills with little chance of injury to their self or others. Any money spent on training is well worth it.

I share your admiration for the Texas D.P.S. Troopers- they are as good as they come. I must, however, take exception to your comment about 100mph+ being dramatically different from 75mph. We have built up a myth that triple digit speeds are fatal even if the roads are empty and your vehicle is properly equipped and maintained.

Look at the accident stats on the German Autobahns compared to our interstates. I have spent quite some time cruising at 150 mph on the Autobahns and suffered no ill effects. If the road is clear, mash the long thin pedal on the right. If you come into traffic, slow down. Keep right except to pass. Always assume that the vehicles around you will do something stupid. You won’t be disappointed. The death rate is almost identical on the Autobahns and our own interstate and the Autobahns have no posted limits in many areas.
