But why repair anything below the waterline at all? All that’s going to happen is the place will get destroyed again. If New Orleans residents want to live below the waterline they can pay for it themselves. If they want to live where people with half an IQ point live – above the waterline – then I’ll agree to help fund it with Federal dollars.

Why are we rebuilding this at all? I realize New Orleans is a symbol, but it was stupid to build there anyway. That’s why the French built where they did – it’s the only area higher than the surrounding water. If my house will be below every body of water around me, I won’t live there. It’s stupid to rebuild on the same site just because people used to live there. Let’s start using our brains and rebuild on higher ground. If that’s not available, maybe New Orleans gets to stay the size of the French Quarter and we figure out something else.

Why are we making this a national problem and a national expense? If they want to rebuild under the water line, fine. But why should I have to pay? This is either a City, County, or State issue; not a Federal issue. Quit sending our federal dollars to New Orleans!

Key West went under water in Wilma. You don’t hear us crying out for federal dollars.

Let’s see, $1Billion divided by about 250,000 (rough estimate of NO population) comes out to about $4,000 – just tax the residents and it will pay for the repairs. If they want to live there, let them pay for it. Local communities all over this country pay for local services, let’s see it happen in New Orleans.

Ray and Key West Agent need a reality check. I assume that you each take responsibility for the work that you perform for your customers. If you screw up, I assume you have to fix the damage. We are all part of the United States, the same United States (i. e. Corp of Engineers) that built the faulty waterway and the faulty levees. If the Feds rightly determine that they bear a great responsibility for most of the damage that was done, you have missed that point when you criticize them for acknowledging their fault and repairing the damage.

why not this? have the fed’s build it up and create a bond that everyone can help pay and get reimbused for. then for those that will live in the area, have them create a fund for recurring inspections and repairs. i lived in key west when andrew let loose! luckily for us, it missed us but we were cutoff power and water. thankfully, they had a subpower station at keywest and an desalination plant. but even still, mother nature disasters needs everyone to help. it does not matter where u live. it matters that you survive and that a neighbor whether in the same city or across the u.s. can help.

Just think… if the Mississippi was allowed to run free we wouldn’t need to protect the city from a storm surge. The sediment that the river would carry would provide a natural storm surge barrier.

Then again New Orleans would not hear of that since this would ultimately clog the commerical channel and make New Orleans a worthless port city.

If you haven’t gathered by this comment, I am opposed to spending tax money on a project that is doomed to failure.
