Despite several cases of violations, and fines, it seems many merchants continue to be negligent with consumer sensitive information. The only for consumers to try to avoid becoming victims of identity theft is to be proactive by refusing to provide negligent merchants with their sensitive information. In addition, consumers need to monitor their credit report, lock access to their credit report (see http://www.creditlock.com ), add their name to the National Do Not Call List, add their name to the Prescreen Optout List, and more….

Technically the only folks who NEED your ssn are banks giving you money and other entities who are entrusting you with a high-value asset with little collateral (cars, homes, etc). Having said that-try telling any of the thousands of other merchants who want this info “no” and see how far you get…

Why does a fitness center need my ssn? Are they going to run my background? Are they afraid I’ll skip my $50 monthly fee and sweat-up their eqp for free???

    State of things these days…
