It is only the VIN number discrepancies that are holding this up…There is already a “defense law” on no insurance violations when evidence of coverage can be shown despite a citation, even if a wrongful conviction goes on record. The 80% want the derelicts to have liability insurance. get on the stick and get this done…

I agree. We shouldn’t delay this just because a few VIN’s are off by one digit. If nothing else, going forward with this database would expedite the correction of those few VIN’s and clients which are affected. More often than not, the household has already been notified of the VIN discrepancy and has failed to follow up on it.

The issue is not having a “few” VIN’s off by “one digit”. The company handling the database is being allowed to use a cascading method to “match” the data. Which is a good thing because if the system required one-to-one matching things might get real interesting. And not in a good way.

This is a very large project by any standards. Each insurer has to dump their entire database every week. So the system is handling a lot of insurer data while concurrently dealing with large updates from the state agencies that are involved.

I’ve been in on the recent TDI conference calls. And I have consulted with insurers working on getting their data in to the state vendor. There is no question in my mind that TDI has done a very good job handling their part of the project so far.

The worse thing for Texas would be to pull the trigger on the system before it’s ready. As one of the many people that worked to get the financial responsibility law passed I want to see it done right.

Waiting a few more months to let them get things working the best they can seems fair considering that the problem they are trying to help solve has been around for over 50 years already.

Todd Staples is correct when he indicates that the last thing needed is for the system to incorrectly bang heads with people that have insurance. We don’t want to give people that have insurance any grief. If the technology is used correctly that should not happen often.

Like many people I have been waiting years to see Texas have a great system. If they need a bit more time to get it right then they should take it.

This grayed haired 75 year old protestant woman came to my office screaming about being forced to purchase insurance. She never ever had insurance. Finally after 58 years of driving on the Texas roads, she was stopped for driving too slow and cautious on the freeway. The judge said that she had to buy liability insurance or park the 1962 Ford Falcon. She kicked and screamed about having to purchase the insurance saying that it downright unamerican. She was NOT an illegal alien. Maybe, the starved Englanders on the Mayflower who sought a better way of life were viewed as illegal aliens by the very American Natives who were thereafter rudely disposed of after the very First Thanksgiving Dinner by the starved Mayflower folks. In God We Trust.

Good point Bill. Why give them something else to worry about on their way to Parkland with the next anchor baby.

Why should illegals have to buy insurance? They are driving cars American’s don’t want.
    Working jobs Americans don’t want.
Going to free hospitals, Americans wouldn’t go to.
Committing crimes Americans wouldn’t commit, then going to jails Americans don’t want to go to.
And having babies, Americans didn’t have.

So what’s the fuss about? No trouble to us right?

Can’t wait to sell them mandatory insurance; especially to the newborn. After that, because of likely proven hard- labor and more pay that what’d they make off the Mayflower, I might cross sell on low-value homeowners; ahhh, and especially Life insurance. You know family oriented folks purchase these products.
