Anyone who leaves a pet to fend for itself in the wake of a hurricane does not deserve to get him/her back. Get them back for what?? So the next hurricane you can leave them again? You hold this animal\’s life in your hands just as God holds our lives in his hands. How would you like it if your God said, \”Gee sorry, no room for you. You just stay here by yourself, and hey, good luck, sorry if you drown or get killed or injured by flying debris.\” People like this make me sick. If you can\’t take care of an animal in good times and bad, you shouldn\’t have one and you sure as he.. don\’t deserve one.

Now, now, that\’s not really fair. Some people were tricked into leaving their pets by rescuers who said they would take the pet as soon as the person got in the boat, only to drive away without the animal. In the aftermath of such a major disaster, many people were disoriented, too. You can\’t make such blanket statements about people or their situations. Most people with pets feel they are family members and some, in fact, stayed behind and died with their pet, rather than leave. Do you feel this is the best course of action? Do prepare for a disaster and make sure your pets are part of the preparation. But try to be a bit more charitable, please.

    Dear Animal Lover:

Maybe you aren\’t aware the MANY MANY persons who fled the flood waters of Katrina during mandatory evacuation were not given a choice regarding their pets. They were not allowed to bring their pets with them, which is why many people did not leave their homes.

I, being a pet owner, would hope that no matter what, I could make arrangements for my pets in the event of an emergency; however, when given the choice between my life and the lives of my children vs. the lives of my pets, I am sorry, my children would win out every time. It would break my heart to leave behind my animals and I would only do it if given no other choice but yes, I would make that choice for the safety of my children. \”Animal Lover\”, God does not punish those with hearts of good intentions. I do not believe that anyone who left their pet behind did so without sacrifice and gut-wrenching sadness.
\”Judge not, lest ye be judged\”

I know when Rita was heading here to Texas, they would either not allow pets in the shelters or would limit each family to one pet. Many people have more than one pet! The people in Lousiana faced the same problem – they COULD NOT take the animals with them. I, too, am an animal lover and it broke my heart to see the abandoned animals. But they had no choice.

OK, so some of you may be right but my animals are my children. You have days of warning for these hurricanes. A lot of people evacuated. If you have a car, you do not go to a shelter, you put your animal in car and drive as far away as possible away from the storm. Drop your family off at the shelter and keep on truckin. If you don\’t have a car, go to a church as soon as you find out disaster is going to hit. I am sure the Priest or Pastor will find a family or friend that is evacuating and will take your pet with them. I know that I would. This is something you can do before you even know about any storm. There are things you can do. I\’m sorry, but when you live in an area that you know will have to be evacuated in the case of a hurricane, you make arrangements. YOU DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PET BEHIND. In the case of the boat, I\’m sorry, but if they said my pet was welcome to only leave them behind, I would be out of the boat in a flash. Would you be too disorinted and leave your children behind?? If you love your pet enough, I am sorry, but there are always options if you care enough and think ahead. I live in a manufactured home in Florida. I ran from four hurricanes within the last year. My dogs went in the back of the SUV and we weathered the storms up north in a cheap motel. Can\’t afford a motel? I saw people weather the storms in rest areas with their animals. If these people are too dumb to find a way to save their animals (children) without sacrificng their families, then again, they should not have animals in their care. I am not judging, I am simply stating the facts.

\”Animal Lover\” clearly is grossly ignorant of what Gulf residents were up against when Katrina and Rita struck, or s/he would not be so judgmental and harsh.

I hope that you never find yourself separated against your will from your \”children\” with some sanctimonious do-gooder holding them hostage and wagging their finger saying you don\’t deserve them back because you didn\’t have ESP and know that such a cataclysm was going to happen. This discussion wouldn\’t be happening if the levees hadn\’t broken and no residents were told the levees were going to break and that they\’d be FORCIBLY PREVENTED FROM RETURNING TO THEIR HOMES FOR WEEKS AND WEEKS–AFTER THEY HAD BEEN FORCED TO ABANDON THEIR ANIMALS.

Many kind-hearted people, truly loving pet-owners, are facing a living hell, possibly for the rest of their lives, because of self-righteous people like you. It\’s a wonder you sleep at night.
