Drew Edmondson, attorney general, was quoted in this article as advising consumers to check a contractor\’s record with his office and the BBB. I have letters from BOTH Drew Edmondson AND the BBB stating complaints are not public information. In his letter, Mr. Edmondson cited Okla. Statutes as the reason for the confidentiality: 51 O.S. 24A.12 and 24A.14. In my opinion, consumer complaints should be in a public, researchable database. Telling consumers that this information is public when it\’s not is highly misleading. There is no really effective way to research contractors when complaints are confidential. Court records are the tip of the ice berg especially when so few can afford to sue anyone, and arbitration clauses prevent it in many cases.

You can read the letters, and see some contractor shortcuts/errors that slipped by, in OK, and by local builders, online. http://photobucket.com/albums/b371/CommonDefects/
