I am a 25 year claim professional who quit my job as a result of the insurance carrier/client I administered claims for failing to promptly pay these claims. I was working for a 3rd party administrator and the carrier was on the phone with their reinsurer before they would even permit us to post proper reserves for the claims presented. It took daily contact with the carrier and reinsurer for 3 weeks to post proper reserves. The carrier needed this to be a \’pass through\’ financial transaction because their rating was under review by A.M. Best. They were downgraded by Best and I resigned in disgust over their approach and handling of these claims. I feel sorry for the clients that were left behind because their claims should have been paid even before I resigned. I thought my resignation might prompt the insurance carrier to let go of the purse strings but they didn\’t. The claims were still pending when I walked out the door…not one was paid in 6 weeks! Right now I am considering whether I wish to re-enter the insurance industry after a 25 year career… I would but only for a solid reputable insurance carrier and those are few and far between.

Steved… I cannot, in good conscious, reveal the name of the TPA I was working for nor their client. I can state the management of my employer attempted to expedite the claims through participation in the conference calls however were unable to do so. Since this was a client that paid timely and never questioned billing (thus a \’golden\’ account) they were \”restrained\” in their efforts. That \’restraint\’ offended me because the people I interacted with had been devastated financially and emotionally. I felt like the carrier was breaching their fiduciary responsibility to their clients while they were the most vunerable they had ever been in their lives. I had no desire to be \’restrained\’ in response to the outrageous conduct of the carrier. They obviously put their interests before those of their clients and (to me) that was representative of a mentality of bad faith. I didn\’t want them as a client but I obviously had no capacity to \’fire them\’ so I \’fired myself\’.

GA, so many times Insurance Companies get a bad rap because the clients thought
\”everything\” was suppose to be covered even though they purchased the cheapest, bare bones policy. On the other hand many times the Companies and TPA\’s put their interest ahead of the consumer for the almighty dollar. I\’ts hard to defend the Companies when instances like the one you described occurs, and I know it\’s not an isolated incident.

Amen SteveD. The clients I dealt with were sophisticated corporate entities who were well prepared for the documentation requested and had no unrealistic expectations. They simply wanted the service they had paid for and their claims paid timely. Unfortunately the client base is one where restrictions in the market limit their choices. That\’s what makes the carrier response so distressing. During one of the conversations the carrier actually wanted to make an E&O claim against their agents because they \’intended\’ to only renew policies with % deductibles but had failed to issue the policies in that format. That was, however, the agreement with their reinsurers. Obviously that was an accounting nightmare for them and we had to quantify exactly the $$$ value of their error. The clients showed far more class, poise and dignity that the carrier in this instance.

    Dear Mr. Commissioner
I\’m a homeowner, was a homeowner from Plaquemines Parish its unfortunate what happen in the aftermath of hurricane katrina, unfortunate for everyone who lost thier homes and love ones. But ti seems even to have taken a different effect on the insurance companys. They sit back waiting to see what coverage you have with another company then tell you should have enough to rebuild. I waited ten weeks before going to them in person, iwas told not to worry they were taking care of everything. Only to recieve a check for living expense and balance check for the reminder of my settlement at same time. What gets me is the settlement frm home owners only covers the roof. That in itself was enough to make someone (lose control) seing as how i didn\’t have a house to put a roof on. It seems to me that a total lose is just that a total lose. Now all i need is for the flood people to tell me the house was destroyed before the water got there. I realize that i.m nobody but i can tell that there is a serious problem with the way insurance companies regulated and conduct (are allowed to conduct) business
    Thank you sir.

I was affected by Hurricane Katrina and my home was totalled. The ins. co. I had stated the damages was not covered. My question is that if you have Hurricane coverage, why wouldn\’t your home be covered? My answer was that the waters that came through was not from the storm
