You place your car on Ebay or Autotrader.com. You get an email stating “I am a broker of cars, and my client would love to see you car in their garage.” The person goes on to explain that he wants your car, but another deal fell through so if you would accept a bank check, I personally received a Bank of America phony check, for over the amount, he would buy your car. Of course, the hitch is the check is more than the value of the car, so cash the check and send them the difference in a Money Order, ding ding ding, that should be a red flag, minus any pickup fees for your car. They even give you the name of a car towing company in your town, that you hire (just take the cost out of the check) and will send you car off to nowhere land.

They target cars of some value, at least around $30k or more, and send a check of $10k or more.

While I got 3 of these emails on my last car, I sent my address to one of them to see if they would actually send me a check. After receiving the check, I took it to Bank of America, who just laughed with me that it was a fake. I really expected them to want to take the check and follow up on it, but they declined. I then went to the police, who their fraud department told me to take it to the Post Master because the check came from Canada.

Oh well. I have an email address, names of people that are supposed to take delivery of the car in the US, but nobody is interested.

Oh well, be careful out there. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

recommend you contact the office of the postal inspector’s office, should be in the phone book. They are one of the most under rated federal investigative agencies there is.
