ICT and APD Work on Crime Prevention Signs

The Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) reported that it is partnering with the Austin Police Department to kick-off an innovative education effort to reduce automobile burglaries. The partnership led to the creation of signs that read, “LOCK your door, TAKE your keys, HIDE your belongings.” The signs have been distributed through out Austin to remind individuals what they can do to protect themselves from becoming a crime victim.

The Austin Police Department has placed the signs in parking areas of shopping malls, apartment complexes and tourist locations. The police department is looking for additional sponsors to help fund the distribution of more signs to locations throughout Austin.

Austin Police Commander Calvin Smith said more than 1,000 automobiles are broken into each month in the city. Smith said the signs will hopefully alert drivers to take their valuables or hide them in their car out of the sight of would-be burglars.

ICT Executive Director Rick Gentry said the crime prevention program promotes good common sense. “The Insurance Council of Texas is honored to be a part of a program that urges motorists to protect their automobile and their belongings through this simple message,” Gentry said. “The signs should also serve as a reminder for everyone to be aware of their surroundings when they are leaving and entering their vehicle.”
